Medals for Finland in the International Physics Olympiad
The Finnish team enjoyed excellent success in the 41st International Physics Olympiad in Zagreb, which came to a close on 25 July. Finnish medal winners were silver medallist Hannu Siikonen from Tapiola Upper-Secondary School and bronze medallists Emil Gustafsson from Turku’s Luostarivuori Upper-Secondary School and Eemeli Tomberg from Hervanta Upper-Secondary School in Tampere.
The result was Finland’s second best, topped only by Heikki Tuuri’s gold medal in 1982. The team’s success was completed by the honourable mentions received by Aku Mustonen from Kaunianen Upper-Secondary School and Juho Kahala from Järvenpää Upper-Secondary School.
370 students from 79 countries took part in the competition. The overall winner of the event was Yichao Yu from China. Finland was by far the best of the Nordic countries. The Finnish team was coached primarily through a cooperative effort between the Department of Physics and the Department of Teacher Education at the University of Jyväskylä. Two coaches travelled along to Zagreb, Anssi Lindell from the University of Jyväskylä and Lasse Frantti from the University of Helsinki.
