Metals Industry
Metals producers manufacture and process steel and copper products, as well as refined steel, zinc and nickel, to meet the needs of the metal goods, machinery, transport equipment, construction, electronics and electrotechnical industries. Every hour, every day of the year, 500 000 kilos of metals are produced. These are used to manufacture the products that surround us daily: refrigerators, washing machines, cars, bicycles, structural steel, ships, computers, mobile telephones, cutlery and even the 50, 20 and 10 cent euro coins, all of which have been made with the Nordic Gold alloy developed by the Finnish metals industry.
The sector is developing increasingly refined special products and related customer services. Operations emphasise know-how, information technology, automation and the effective exploitation of the latest technologies. Finland's metals industry is known for its efficient use of energy and raw materials, and in certain processes it is the world leader or one of the leading practitioners. Over half of the world´s copper and one-third of its nickel are manufactured by ecological process developed by the Finns. A process that generates the required energy by itself.
Recycling is a self-evident part of the industry; in Finland over 90 % of the steel recovered from discarded products is reused, and 80 % of the copper made in the world ever is recycled.
