TRIO to improve networks and support systems suppliers
The Finnish technology industry has performed well in recent years, measured by any yardstick. Companies enjoy full employment and full order books. Nevertheless, the industry is facing certain growth challenges. Small and medium-sized companies in particular should grow organically and globally, and fast.
The main Finnish contractor companies are already global players, and their networks comprise both Finnish and global companies. Improving these networks in Finland and making them more international has become a key success factor for the main contractors too.
The TRIO programme (2004 - 2009) launched by the Federation of Finnish Technology Industries responds to the challenges companies are facing with respect to growth, internationalisation and networking by backing up development projects and by providing funding. TRIO’s objective is to change the structure of the industry, which no longer meets the requirements of its main contractors and fails to address global changes. The lack of systems suppliers forms a bottleneck, and companies are encouraged to grow into that role.
TRIO has put together a comprehensive group of actors that support similar development work. TRIO features representatives from the Ministry of Employment and the Economy, the Finnish Innovation Fund (Sitra) and the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (Tekes) as financers, and Finpro as the agency providing support for internationalisation efforts.
Increased venture financing is a necessity for business growth, and TRIO aims to improve the opportunities of Finnish technology companies of securing venture capital.
By supporting internationalisation efforts together with Finpro and Tekes, TRIO wants to help companies increase their export, import and manufacturing activities. Export promotion measures target small and medium-sized main contractors, while import and international sourcing focuses on systems and component suppliers.
